Part of Photoshop’s attraction is that if offers a huge number of tools. Many beginners find it’s different multiple menus confusing initially. Working hands-on with the software ensures that you will be navigating Photoshop’s menu with ease by the end of your course.
Photoshop is an incredibly powerful graphics editing package. Historically it was used just to edit and manipulate images. More recently it has become so powerful that it is now frequently used by designers to create small graphical items from scratch. For example, simple buttons and images for use in a website.
It is used incredibly widely. Industries as far apart as astronomy and medicine use it extensively, as well as everything in between.
Photoshop is a raster based image editing program. This means that it sees a picture as a huge grid of dots called pixels. However, it also uses vector methods (a more mathematical representation of an image) for the macro elements of an image like it’s layout and also for some large elements in an image like text.
Photoshop is available by subscription either individually or as part of the Adobe Creative Suite.
There are three frequently used versions of the software:
1. Photoshop CC
This is the full version of Photoshop. As part of the Adobe Creative Cloud it is updated on an ongoing basis. Previous (non-cloud) versions of the software were named CS6, CS5 and so on.
2. Photoshop Elements
Elements is a cheaper, slimmed-down version of Photoshop. It is aimed at hobbyists rather than professionals, and does not offer all of Photoshop’s power. Many people with less demanding needs find that it is more than sufficient for their needs however.
3. Photoshop Lightroom
Lightroom is aimed specifically at photographers. It is also a streamlined version of Photoshop but with some specific photograph editing tools added. It also has specialised workflows and tools for photo editing and also handles files in a different way.
