WordPress is an incredible free website builder and content management system.

It allows experts to create very large, complex sites.

It is relatively straightforward to get started with WordPress.  If you are comfortable using programs like Microsoft Word and Excel you will be fine.

The question is how far do you want to take it.

If you want to create a large international site you will need to spend some time learning a number of advanced skills and potentially learning to edit it’s open source code.

If you would just like to create a small, hobby WordPress site you can probably learn how to do that in a day or so.

A WordPress theme is a template at heard.

A WordPress theme will determine the overall look of your WordPress site. This is everything from your colour scheme to how the individual elements on your page (buttons etc) will be presented.

A WordPress plugin is a small application that you ‘plugin’ to your site.

When you download a plugin it will be inserted into your site’s code and add to your sites funcationality.

There are plugins for almost every conceivable purposes including managing and improving your site security, setting up an online business, managing your WordPress users etc.

Installing the basic WordPress software onto a hosting server takes about 15 minutes once you know-how and have a domain name. Many hosting providers will provide this already set up for you so you may not even need to do this. This article explains how.

However, that is only the start of creating a site that search engines and users will enjoy using.
