Creating a water colour effect in Photoshop

This short Photoshop article will show you a quick way to create a water colour effect. These techniques are covered in our Photoshop courses if you would like to learn more.

The first thing you are going to want to do Is open up your image and then create 3 copies of the image. You are then going to want to hide the top two so just click on the eye that you see next to the layer.

p1

Next you are going to want to select the first copy you made and then you are going to want to go to the filter tab and down to filter gallery.

p2

Once the window has poped up in artistic filters you will see one called Cut-out. You  want to set it to have same settings as I have. Then click ok and it will apply the filter.

p3

When the filter has been applied you need to change the blending options for the layer. This can be found just above the layers panel and you are going to want to set it to Luminosity.

p4

When you have changed the blending options you should have something similar to the image below.

p5

Now we move on to the second copy of your image. You will need to make it visible so just click where you clicked to hide it. After that, you need to go back to the filter gallery and select a filter called Dry Brush it’s located next to the Cut-out filter. You will also need to set the settings the same as I have.

p6

When you have clicked ok in the filter window you will then need to change the blend option to screen.

p7

You will then be left with something which looks like this.

p8

Onto the last copy you made in Photoshop. For this one you will need to make it visible again just like you did for the layer before. You are then going to need to go to the filter tab and then down to Noise and in the next window down Median.

p9

This window will then pop-up and you are going to want to set the radius to 12 and click ok.

p10

And just like the others you will need to change the blending options this time you will need to change it to Soft Light.

p11

Now you image is complete and you should have an image like the one below where it looks like it has been painted with water colours.
